Asylum seekers traumatised by torture face difficulties settling in France

K-News
June 26th, is the day the United Nations has chosen to recognize survivors of torture. The Denmark-based International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims estimates that between 20 and 30 percent of refugees in the world have suffered torture. France has about 50 thousand asylum applications a year so between 10 and 15 thousand of these might be victims of torture. According to groups that work with refugees, conditions for treating them have deteriorated. Asylum seekers spend so much time looking for a place to live that they cannot focus on overcoming the trauma of torture.
