France was extremely disappointed in 2005 when it lost out to London, in its bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. For the authorities in the northern French region of Pas de Calais, however, the loss was an opportunity to promote their area, which is just a few hours from London, as a pre-competition training base for Olympic teams from all over the world.
