French photographer dies in Syria

A French freelance photographer has died from serious wounds suffered after a shell exploded in Syria.

Thirty-eight year old Olivier Voisin suffered head and arm injuries from shrapnel when the shell exploded near Idlib, in northern Syria, on Thursday.

He underwent surgery at a hospital in the Turkish border city of Antakya on Friday.

But a French foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Sunday Olivier died after surgery.

Olivier’s photos were published in major French and British newspapers.

One of his last assignments was a series of photographs from Aleppo for the news agency AFP.

Apart from Syria, he also covered news events in Libya, Somalia, Brazil, Haiti, Kenya and the United States.

Voisin was born in South Korea but was adopted by a French family.

The NGO Reporters Without Borders says more than 20 journalists and 50 citizen journalists have been killed in Syria since the uprising began in March 2011.
