Alleged Islamophobe attack victim attempts suicide

A 16-year-old girl who claimed to have suffered an Islamophobic attack in the tense French town of Trappes this month was set to undergo surgery on Tuesday after trying to commit suicide.

The girl, known as Aissetou, was in hospital on Monday night after she jumping out of the window of the fourth floor flat where she lives.

No reason has been given for her suicide attempt, the second since she reported being attacked on 13 August, according to police a police sources that say she took an overdose four days ago.

Eight lorries of CRS riot police were parked out in front of the police station in Trappes's sensitive Merisier district overnight but no violence was reported.

The area was the scene of riots for three nights in July after a Muslim convert accused police of mistreating her husband when they stopped and questioned her because she was wearing a garment that concealed her face, which is illegal in a public place in France.

Police detained the man, also a Muslim convert, accusing him of trying to strangle an officer.

On 13 August the young woman, who was wearing an Islamic veil, reported having been insulted, threatened and assaulted by two men, one of them a skinhead.

She was due to undergo treatement in Paris's Georges-Pompidou hospital on Tuesday morning.
