Mortar fire near French embassy in Yemen
A mortar shell was fired in the direction of the French embassy in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen on Sunday night and a car bomb exploded metres away.
Issued on:
The shell fell by a concrete block installed for security reasons on a road leading to the embassy. Tthere were no victims.
"The embassy is open and is operating normally", said an official on Monday morning.
The car was parked halfway between the embassy and the residence of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in the diplomatic district of Hadda, and it is unclear whether it targeted the embassy or the residence.
Such acts have increased in Yemen where tensions are high as secessionist violence rises.
Al-Qaeda is also active in the country, which is undergoing a difficult transition since Saleh stepped down in February 2012 after 33 years in power.
