US company pitches to recycle France's cigarette butts

Issued on:

In France, where young people are among Europe's biggest smokers, streets are often littered with cigarette butts, which take around 12 years to degrade. US company TerraCycle has launched the first butt-recycling programme, transforming the plastic in the filters into everything from pipes to ashtrays. After reducing the Canadian city of Vancouver's cigarette-butt waste by 99 per cent, TerraCycle now hopes to win over France. We visit the Rexclub, the first venue in Paris to start collecting cigarette butts.
