"I immediately decided, as a precaution, to suspend the police sergeant, "said French Minister of the Interior Bernard Cazeneuve. “If the investigation confirms his involvement, and as soon as I know the outcome, I will take all necessary provisions."

The officer, whose name has not been disclosed, is believed to have made off with up to three million euros worth of illegal street drugs seized during a Paris raid in early July.

Security camera footage revealed a man in his 30s entering the headquarters with two bags during the night of the 24 to 25 July, according to a joint statement from police and prosecutors.

Other officers helped identify the man as a member of the anti-drugs unit.

The BBC reported that only three high officials had keys to the locked room.

Officials said the drugs were being held in evidence bags and were found missing last Thursday.

The officer was arrested while vacationing near the Spanish border.

This is latest scandal to emerge from Paris’ police headquarters located on the bank of the Seine River and near the famed Notre Dame cathedral.

In April, two high-ranking officials were charged with raping a Canadian tourist.
