Six Mirage bombers will be deployed in Jordan on Thursday to “strengthen our presence in the theatre of operations”, government spokesperson Stéphane Le Foll said in Paris.

French officials announced their intention of sending the planes a fortnight ago before consulting Amman.

The decision was confirmed last week but the military were not expecting to send them until December.

France agreed to join the US campaign against IS in September and has launched air strikes against the group in Iraq but not in Syria.

Until now the flights have been made by nine fighter jets based in the United Arab Emirates.
