The experienced skiers, between the ages of 50 and 70, went on a hike – called “snow touring” –on Saturday in the mountain range straddling France and Italy.

However, the four men and two women were swept under a massive avalanche.

Officials from the Haute-Alpes department said three of the victims were found overnight Saturday to Sunday at the foot of the avalanche, while the others were recovered on Sunday morning.

A team of 18 rescue workers, along with a helicopter team and sniffer dogs, led the search effort.

Each year, around 30 people die in avalanches in France.

The Association for Snow and Avalanche Studies said 11 people had already died since the start of this year’s season, according to AFP.
