The first body was found 15 metres offshore of Marseille's Calanques, a rocky

coastal area riddled with bays and inlets that stretches west towards Cassis, emergency services announced on Sunday morning.

They later announced that a second body had been found nearby.

Overnight rescue workers were called out to search for three youths, aged 16 and 17, who had gone missing off the Calanques.

The 17-year-old managed to swim to the shore but a search for the other two was called off at 11.00pm, resumed on Sunday morning but then suspended again because of stormy seas caused by the Mistral high winds that have been blowing for two days.

Police have launched an inquiry into the deaths.
