“For the second time this year, we have witnessed a tremendous surge in the president’s popularity,” Ifop pollster deputy director Frédéric Dabi said.

Hollande’s ratings climbed up by 22 points in the aftermath of the November Paris attacks.

The poll also showed that 62 per cent of French people believe Hollande “defends France’s interests abroad well”.

This popularity surge is the biggest recorded by a French president under the Fifth Republic.

The polls published just five days before the first round of regional elections are seen as a test for the 2017 general election.

Although, according to Ifop, only 28 per cent of French people want him to be re-elected.
