Major attacks in Europe a certainty, says PM Valls

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said that more major attacks in Europe are a certainty. Speaking at the three-day Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Valls said that this was a new era characterized by the lasting presence of hyper terrorism.

“We must be fully conscious of the threat, and react with a very great force and great lucidity. There will be attacks. Large-scale attacks. It's a certainty. This hyper-terrorism is here to stay,” he added during a round table which was attended his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev.

“The force of the ideological fascination is formidable, and if we have changed era it is because this hyper-terrorism is in the heart of our societies.”

Paris was hit by two terrorist attacks last year. In January, 12 people were killed in the attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical news weekly. In November, 130 people were killed by Islamic State armed group jihadists in a series of attacks on bars, a football stadium and the Bataclan concert hall.

Valls also called on Russia to stop conducting strikes in Syria affecting the civilian population.

“I say without any ambiguity and confidence to Dmitry Medvedev: France respects Russia and its interests, but we know that to return to the path of peace and of the discussion, the bombing of the civilian population must end,” he said.
