Did you think that France is just part of continental Europe? Wrong! It stretches around almost the entire globe. Officially the islands of Reunion, in the Indian Ocean, and Guadeloupe and Martinique, in the West Indies, are as much parts of France as the Paris region, Ile de France. Tahiti and other islands in the Pacific are also part of la République, although with slightly different status. Not everyone living in the islands likes this arrangement. Sarah Elzas reported on strikes that affected some overseas départements in 2009 and took some photos while she was there.
