The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas vowed to continue its campaign of deadly attacks on Israelis as a new round of Middle East peace talks began in Washington on Thursday.

Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Wuhri said resistance operations would continue, after two shooting attacks on West Bank roads left four Israeli settlers dead and two others wounded.

Having claimed responsibility for both attacks, Hamas has linked them to the relaunch of direct Israeli-Palestinian talks in Washington, which it fervently opposes.

Security forces conducted a search in the occupied West Bank for the gunmen, while an unnamed Israeli official hailed the Palestinian Authority for what he termed the arrest of hundreds of "terrorists" in the disputed territory.

The Palestinian Authority has denied the arrest of any Hamas members in connection with the attacks. Hamas gave conflicting accounts of the number arrested in the crackdown.

Leadership in Hamas-controlled Gaza put the figure at 550, while a senior Hamas official in the West Bank estimated it was closer to 150.
