Two die in Yemen protests

Yemeni police have shot dead two protesters in the southern city of Aden as anti-government demonstrations continued for the fourth straight day.

The fatalities – one named Yassin Askar, the other unidentified – were among three people hospitalised. Medics said the unidentified victim had been hit in the back.

Demonstrators threw stones at police, set tyres and vehicles on fire and stormed a municipal building where gunfire was heard.

At least four people were arrested in Aden as police fired warning shots and tear gas to disperse protesters.

In the capital Sanaa, at least 10 protesters were injured in clashes between students demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh and supporters of his ruling General People's Congress.

Also in Sanaa, a sit-in by judges continued for a second day. They are demanding higher salaries, greater independence for the judiciary and the sacking of the entire Supreme Judicial Council, including the justice minister.

Workers in Sanaa gathered at several state-owned companies to demand that their managers step down. They too called for higher wages.
