Mubarak and sons to face trial in August

Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons will face trial on the 3 August, a judicial source said yesterday. They will face charges of ordering the killing of protesters and fraud.

Hosni Mubarak is likely to be tried in absentia.

The public prosecutor had announced Tuesday that the ousted president could not be moved from the hospital where he is lying in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

According to a judiciary medical commission, Mubarak is suffering from heart problems, as well as low blood pressure and a nervous breakdown.

On 3 August he will have to answer several charges, with his two sons, Alaa and Gamal as well as his friend, businessman Hussein Salem, who is on the run.

The most serious charge is the premeditated murder of 846 demonstrators during this year’s Egyptian revolution.

If convicted he will face death by hanging.

The Mubaraks and Salem are also accused of profiteering through abuse of influence and wasting public funds. The decision to finally put the ex-president on trial came under the pressure of continued demonstrations in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and other parts of Egypt .
