Yemen’s opposition has vowed to step up protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Six soldiers have been killed in attacks blamed on Al-Qaeda.
The opposition Common Forum called on Yemenis to “escalate the peaceful struggle in all the regions”, leading member Mohammed Sabri said after Saleh dismissed offers of a compromise which would see him leave by the end of the year.
He vowed to stay until his mandate runs out in 2013.
An indirect dialogue between Saleh and the opposition that was being conducted through clerics has ended, Sabri said.
Security forces arrested 16 protesters in Aden, the main southern city, on Saturday as thousands demonstrated against poverty, corruption and high unemployment.
On Sunday thousands of protesters took to the streets for the third consecutive day in Ataq in the eastern province of Shabwa.
In three attacks which security forces blame on Al-Qaeda:
- Four Republican Guards were shot dead as they delivered food near Marib, east of Sanaa;
- An army colonel was shot dead in Zinjibar in the south;
- An army officer was shot dead at a restaurant in the city of Sayun in the south-east.
The US and the UK on Sunday advised their nationals to consider leaving the country.
Saleh is a key ally of the two countries in the fight with Al-Qaeda.
