"About 216 climbers have summited Everest over the weekend, and at least 30 more are expected to climb tomorrow," said Tilak Pandey, an official with the Nepal mountaineering department.

The figures do not include those climbing from the Tibet side of the mountain, the route chosen by 13-year-old American Jordan Romero, who became the youngest person ever to climb Everest on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, Nepalese mountaineer Apa Sherpa, 50, broke his own record by clibing Everest for the 20th time. His expedition included 16-year-old Arjun Vajpai, who became the younest Indian to scale the peak.

Nasrin Jahan, a 30-year-old journalist, became the first Bangladeshi to conquer the summit on Sunday.

Austrian Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, 39, reached the peak on Monday. She will become the third woman to conquer the world's 14 highest summits if she scales the neighbouring K2 mountain as planned in the summer.

Around 2,900 people have climbed Mount Everest since Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal became the first to conquer the peak in 1953.

Most ascents happen in late April and May, when a small season between spring and the summer monsoon offers the best conditions for the climb.
