South African athletes are off on their summer break in preparation for next season’s enormous challenges. These will culminate in the 2012 London Olympic Games where they hope to return south with a fresh crop of medals.

Amongst the favourites are 400-metre specialist LJ Van Zyl, javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen and the controversial 800-metre runner Caster Semenya.

But all eyes will also be on the 400-metre athlete Oscar Pistorius.

This week, RFI meets some of the athletes and looks back at a season that culminated in the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

There our correspondent discovers that athletics has an impact on South African society that goes well beyond the country’s stadiums.
