Tsonga capitulates, Federer loses his cool

Five things we learned from day 10 at Roland Garros.

  • Having match points is no good unless you win the match. French fifth seed Jo-Wilifried Tsonga had four match points against top seed Novak Djokovic but could not convert any of them.
  • Novak Djokovic is a tough cookie. He came from two sets down to beat Andreas Seppi in the last 16 and then saved match points in the quarter-final against Tsonga.

  • Even Roger Federer can lose his cool. The normally supersmooth Swiss railed at the crowd or himself - he didn't seem to know which - while he was being pummelled by Juan-Martin del Potro.
  • Italian football may be knee-deep in scandal but the tennis players are making a good show. Francesca Schiavone won the women's crown in 2010 and was beaten finalist last year. Sara Errani upset the German 10th seed Angelique Kerber to advance to the last four.
  • They cannot be serious. Scores of spectators left the centre court as the Tsonga v Djokovic match entered the final set. Seemed an odd time to leave. Or perhaps they knew that, having squandered four match points, Tsonga would meekly capitulate. Well, string my racquet - Tsonga lost the decider 6-1.
