Among the five things we learned during the last day of the Olympics were, British pop musicians spanning two decades entertained millions around the world in the closing ceremony. The French men’s handball team was victorious over Sweden. And the United States basketball team won gold.

That a closing ceremony can be a good laugh. If the creative team get the right people right here right now. So it was great to see Fatboy Slim on the decks and who couldn't be moved by the sight of the Spice Girls prancing around singing their stuff from the late 90s

That a closing ceremony can be a dodgy idea. George Michael has given us some brilliant songs since the early 80s. Elton John once dubbed him his musical heir. But quite why Michael was permitted to perform White Light - his paean to the spirit of endurance - Sisyphus only knows.

The French are good at handball. The men's team retained their Olympic title with a victory over Sweden. They also defended their world championship crown last year and are the European champions. They are the first men's side to have held all three titles. Allez les Bronzés as a fan might say.

The Americans are good at basketball. The United States won gold for the second Olympics in a row. But would there be any other outcome with a team containing the talents of Lebron James and Kobe Bryant? Well they might not have won, this is the Olympics mate.

We've all been touched by the Olympic spirit. From curmudgeons to the most ardent of advocates. There have been great achievements and disappointments. It has been a voyage of discovery, a roller coaster of emotions, a chance for cliches.
