Traffic hell for France's ski-resort holiday-makers

There were traffic jams on 231 kilometres of France's roads at midday Saturday as some holidaymakers headed for ski resorts, while others headed home. Traffic watchers advised motorists to avoid using roads out of the Alps between 10.00am and 6.00pm.

The Bison Fûté monitoring system gave Saturday its highest level of alert to roads ski

stations in the Alps and its second-highest to roads heading out of them.

A total of 231 kilometres of France's roads were jammed at midday Saturday, 132 kilometres in the south-east.

The journey from Lyon to Grenoble on the A43 motorway was taking one hours 20 minutes, instead of 50 minutes.

Traffic jams were also reported on the A43 towards Lyon from Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, near Genoble and in Savoie.

In the south-west their were jams on roads to ski resorts in Andorra and towards Spain.
