British start to the Tour de France

For the first time since 2007, the Tour de France starts in the United Kingdom. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate signalled the official start from the town of Leeds in Yorkshire.

Defending champion Chris Froome of Team Sky headed out from Leeds this Saturday with the rest of the Tour de France peloton of 196 riders.

British fans are revelling in the chance to see their cycling heroes on home soil and about 2 million spectators are expected along the route in the United Kingdom.

12 Million spectators watch the Tour de France, the third biggest sporting event in the world.

This year the race will be 3664 km in total, from Leeds to Paris.
