French rugby players injured in machete attack

French internationals rugby players Aurélien Rougerie, Julien Pierre and Benjamin Kayser were attacked on Sunday by a dozen armed men with machetes and sabres.

All three were rushed to a hospital in the southern town of Millau, where they underwent surgery, but they are not in life-threatening conditions.

Rougerie and Kayser were discharged Monday morning while Pierre was still in surgery for a badly wounded hip.

"As they walked back to their hotel overnight Saturday, a group of players was assaulted by a dozen people carrying weapons including machetes, sabres" said the ASM Clermont Auvergne, one of the best rugby club in France.

Police have arrested four people.

The incident occured around 3:00 am Sunday morning, after the players were returning from a nightclub.

The players were staying in Millau on their way to a training camp.

Rougerie, 33, is Clermont's captain and has 77 caps for France.

Kayser, 29, has played 24 times for France and Pierre, 33, has 27 caps.
