Monaco became the second French club to enter the quarter finals of this year’s Champions League after seeing off Arsenal in a thrilling encounter on Tuesday.

Despite losing 2-0 to Arsenal at the Louis II stadium, Monaco managed a 3-3 aggregate that helped them to go through on away goals. This is the first time since 2004 that Monaco have gone beyond the round of 16.

A week ago, Paris St Germain had qualified for the quarterfinals beating Chelsea.
Arsenal were attempting to become the first team in Champions League history to overcome a 3-1 first-leg defeat at home but came up agonisingly short.

Goals from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey had provided plenty of hope for the visitors. But it wasn’t enough for the North Londoners.

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev hailed the result as a great moment in the club's history.

“It's a great night for AS Monaco and it's been 11 years since the 2003-04 season when the team reached this level. Arsenal played a great match but we stayed solid defensively although the final minutes were very difficult,” he said.

While Monaco strikers were the stars in their team’s 3-1 win over Arsenal in the first leg, it was their goalkeeper Danijel Subasic who played a decisive role in ensuring Arsenal didn’t add more to their tally.
