The Serbian performed a great escape act to win the match in three sets after being a set down and a break down in the second set.
Djokovic eventually prevailed with 6-7, 7-5, 6-0.
In the quarter-final he will now clash with sixth seed David Ferrer, who defeated Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-6 (7/5), 6-0.
Britain's Andy Murray added another feather to his cap as he registered his 500th career victory with a three-sets win over South Africa's Kevin Anderson.
Murray is the first British man to reach this milestone.
