Cristiano Ronaldo joins the Real Madrid 300 club

Cristiano Ronaldo reached a landmark on Wednesday night with Real Madrid's opener at Rayo Vallecano. It was his 300th goal for the side. The strike midway through the second half helped to maintain his team's hunt for the Spanish title and it allowed the Portuguese star to joins a select band of players

Years ago on British television, the former footballer Mick Channon was employed as a TV pundit during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. As the then Everton forward Gary Lineker rampaged through defences, Channon - with an English west country intonation - remarked: "That boy Lineker done well."

The former England international's phrase and perhaps something of an Iberian accent could be applied to the striker Cristiano Ronaldo as he hit the 300 goal mark for Real Madrid.

The 30-year-old reached the tally on Wednesday night at Rayo Vallecano. It was Real's first goal in a 2-0 victory that keeps them four points behind the La Liga leaders Barcelona with eight games remaining.

It's taken Ronaldo 288 games since he joined Real them from Manchester United in 2009.

To put the achievement into context; other members of Real's 300 club, Raul and Alfredo Di Stefano weren't as prolific.

Raul needed 741 games for his 323 goals and Di Stefano's 307 came after 396 matches.

For the real geeks, 41 of Ronaldo's strikes have been headers, 55 goals have been from penalties and 46 have been thrashed home from outside the penalty area. Inside the box has been his happiest hunting ground, here he's scored 158 times.

The story goes that when the boy was born in Madeira on 5 February 1985, his father had been so impressed by the American actor Ronald Regan that he added Ronaldo to his son's name as a homage.

Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aveiro has been imperious in attack ever since. He's scored 423 goals, five during his 31 games for sporting Portugal between 2002 and 2003.

His tally for Manchester United was respectable too. In his six years at Old Trafford, he transformed himself from brooding prodigy into a thoroughbred striker. He played nearly 300 times for United and hit the target 118 times.

His trophy haul in Spain with his 300 goals has been impressive. one Copa del Rey, one La Liga, one Spanish Supercup, a uefa champions league, a European Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup.

Real can still win La Liga and retain their champions league crown. It's likely that their star forward will have a big say in those successes.
