Monfils loses to Berdych in Monte Carlo tennis semis

Gael Monfils’s golden run at the Monte Carlo Masters came to an end after he lost his semi-final match against Tomas Berdych on Saturday. The Frenchman, who had registered one of his career’s biggest wins by beating Roger Federer in the third round, went down in straight sets against the Czech player.

The sixth seeded Berdych will now play the winner of the other semi-final encounter between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Monfils, who was aiming to become the first French player since Cédric Pioline in 2000 to reach the Monte Carlo Masters, committed 13 enforced errors in the first set, enabling Berdych to easily win it 6-1 in just 23 minutes.

Despite dropping his serve in the second set, Berdych was able to cruise to victory with a 6-1, 6-4 scoreline.

Monfils, who had beaten Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-final, was hoping to reach his first Masters 1000 final since the 2010 Paris Masters.

Berdych will be playing in his fourth Masters 1000 final and the first since losing to Federer in Madrid three years ago.
