Hull pulls away from relegation zone, Liverpool jeopardises Champions League spot

Hull beat Liverpool 1-0 on Tuesday night in Premier League football. Hull's captain Michael Dawson scored in the 36th minute with a header from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner.

The win puts Hull four points above the relegation zone moving them above Aston Villa and giving them some distance from 18th-placed Sunderland. They have four games left against Arsenal, Burnley, Tottenham and Manchester United.

Maintaining a clean sheet on Tuesday was also the first time since October 2013 that Hull have secured back-to-back clean sheets.

For Liverpool the loss means their chances of a Champions League place looks to be over. Liverpool are now seven points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United with an inferior goal difference.

It also puts Liverpool's place in the Europa Cup under threat. It is the fifth placed Premiership team who qualify and Tottenham are biting at Liverpool's heals - they both have 58 points and are separated only by goal difference.

Liverpool supporters boycotted last night's game at the KC Stadium as a protest against high ticket prices.

Liverpool were also without Steven Gerrald, who was replaced by Joe Allen. Gerrald was not even included among the substitutes.

Hull were definitely the more adventurous team and although Liverpool had more of the possession in the first half they were not really decisive.

We didn’t look like scoring really to be honest. I thought we’d some good moments and had enough of the ball, but never really threatened the goal. We’re disappointed with the goal that we conceded. We didn’t have too many opportunities against us, but in that moment we didn’t defend it well enough. But like I said, we had enough of the game, between the boxes we were okay, but where it counts in that final third, we just couldn’t make the breakthrough. It’s just having that reference, or a few references at the top end of the field that gives the other players the confidence and the movement to create opportunities. So the players put great energy into the game, they worked very hard, but our struggles tonight were what they’ve been for a big part of the season in terms of that sort of creativity and scoring goals.

I thought we deserved it for the way we set ourselves up and the way we played and caused them a threat all night. Of course, when you play Liverpool you’ve got to defend well and we’ve given ourselves a chance. We’ve given ourselves a right chance to put back-to-back victories at this particular stage is crucial. So we’ve given ourselves a good chance but I still think we still need a couple of results. I don’t think 34 [points] is enough, so we’re all delighted but back to work in the morning. Make no mistake we’re in a better position than we were four days ago. So we’re rightly pleased and we can be, but we’ve got Arsenal coming up next Monday night. So we’ll get ready and get prepared for that one and see what we can do.
