Hamilton, who also placed second in qualifying, battered off a sluggish start and some late tyre changes by his mechanics to take second after switching tactics to jump ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel who nipped ahead of him at the start.
The 29-year-old German drove himself to victory from pole position after being beaten by Hamilton in all four of this year’s flyaway season-opening races and it was his first since Brazil in November.
Rosberg sped towards the chequered flag with an extra 17.5 seconds after making two pit-stops to Hamilton’s three.
Trailing by just 20 points, Rosberg’s win breathes new life into the race and slows down Hamilton’s momentum.
Williams’ Valtterri Bottas came in fourth place but was able to narrowly squeeze out Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who followed in fifth.
