Arab Elite Chess Tournament to be hosted by Dubai

The third edition of the Arab Elite Chess Championship will kick off 26 May in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai. The winner can look forward to the 8,000 dollar (7,266 euro) cash prize and the Kirsan Ilyumzhinov Cup. The other the top six players will receive cash prizes as well.

Sixteen Arab member states of the Fédération Internationale des Echecs (FIDE) have so far confirmed plans to send their champions to the event.

Only the national federations of Somalia, Mauritania, Kuwait and Syria have yet to confirm.

Currently, the top 25 Arab chess players include nine Egyptians, three from Morocco and Iraq, and players from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Palestine, Algeria, Tunisa, Jordan and Lebanon.

Top Arab players according to the FIDE rating list are Mohamad Al-Modiahki from Qatar with a rating of 2586, followed by Hichem Hamdouchi (Morocco, rating 2556) and Essam El-Gindy (Egypt, rating 2497).

The first Arab Elite Chess championship took place in 2011, and was won by Ahmed Adly from Egypt.

The tournament follows the Swiss system format with a total of nine rounds.

It will adopt the Fischer time control system, allotting 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment for each move to complete a game.

Visitors will be able to follw the games on large television screens that have been set up in different areas at the venue for guests.

The tournament will conclude on 4 June.
