Serena Williams beat her older sister Venus,  6-4, 6-3 on Monday, paving her the way to the quarter-finals. Venus had won the last game the sisters played against each other in the semi-finals in Montreal last summer, but it only took 67 minutes for Serena to win against Venus on the Centre Court.

Just before the match, Serena Williams had said that playing her big sister would be quite a challenge though adding that her game was improving faster than she had expected.

Serena Williams was confirmed as the first player to qualify for this year's BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore, the first time that someone is qualified this early in the year.

French player Richard Gasquet also made it to the quarter-finals this afternoon after beating Australian player Nick Kyrgios, 7-5, 6-1, 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (8/6). Gasquet was a semi-finalist in 2007, and he will face either French Open champion Stan Wawrinka or Belgium's David Goffin for a place in the semi-finals.

Maria Sharapova endured a tough match but made it through to the quarter-finals with a win over Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas, 6-4, 6-4.

Defending Novak Djokovic was playing Kevin Anderson, seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer was to play against Roberto Bautista Agut and Andy Murray was meeting Ivo Karlovic. Karlovic won against French player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his last match, but has never been, so far, able to defeat the Scot - in five meetings.
