A first half strike by midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the Wembley Stadium was enough for North Londoners to retain the title.

Despite the loss, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claimed that his team had been the best.

"Arsenal defended with 10 players; they put everybody in front of their own line and they had good organisation," he said.

Arsenal could have won by a bigger margin had it not been for some brilliant saves by Chelsea goalkeeper Thibault Courtois.

The win was significant for another reason as well. It was Arsenal's first goal against Chelsea in 506 minutes of football.

It was also the first time in 14 attempts that Arsenal managed to beat Mourinho-managed Chelsea.

With this important win under their belt, Arsenal would be the hot favourites in this weekend's Premier League opener against West Ham United.
