Murray, seeded third, came through 7-5 6-3 4-6 6-1 against Kyrgos who is only 20 years old and proved to be an unpredictable opponent for many top seed players.

But the Scot's long experience helped him as he broke serve seven times to eventually win in two hours and 43 minutes.

Murray, who is eight years older than Kyrgos, will now face Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in round two on Thursday.

"It was tough and I had to do a lot of running in very humid conditions," said Murray. "I'm getting old now   28 years old. I need to get in the ice bath and cool off a bit."

Kyrgios was back on the scene, playing his first Grand Slam tournament since being fined and given a suspended ban for remarks made about collegue Stan Wawrinka's girlfriend during a match at the Montreal Open last month.

He is scheduled to play mixed doubles with Eugenie Bouchard in New York after which he will then travel to Glasgow to be part of Australia's Davis Cup semi-final against Great Britain.

This may involve a possible revanche match with Andy Murray.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Federer had little trouble in seeing off Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in just 77 minutes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 34-year-old Swiss, who may become the oldest champion in New York in 45 years, fired 12 aces, 29 winners and broke serve six times.
