Paris, LA lead shortlist to host 2024 Olympics

Budapest, Hamburg, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome are in the running to host the 2024 Games, the International Olympic Committee has announced. The IOC released the shortlist of the final candidates Wednesday morning, with the winning bid to be announced in Lima, Peru, in September 2017.

The news comes after Toronto mayor John Tory earlier announced that the Canadian city had decided not to bid because of financial uncertainties.

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan - which hosted the inaugural European Games in June - had also considered bidding.

IOC president Thomas Bach described the five cities in the 2024 race as "outstanding", saying the contest would be "strong and fascinating".

Paris is hoping to host the Olympics to celebrate the centennial year of its hosting the Games in 1924.

The race for the next Olympics is the first to be run under the IOC's Agenda 2020 reforms, which are aimed at making the bidding less bureaucratic and less expensive.
