England cruise to Euro 2016 finals – qualification round-up and look ahead

England became only the sixth team to complete a European Championship campaign with a 100 per cent record on Monday with their 3-0 victory against Lithuania. Manager Roy Hodgson fielded an experimental team which overwhelmed the home side, giving England two matches to spare in a flawless qualification performance.

In Monday night’s other games, Slovakia qualified for their first ever European Championships beating Luxembourg 4-2 in Group C.

Spain beat Ukraine in Kiev with a header from Mario Gaspar in a match dominated by Spanish possession and six yellow cards.

Russia beat Montenegro to secure automatic qualification. The result means that Sweden are consigned to the playoffs. Despite the Swedes securing a 2-0 win over Moldova they could only muster third place in Group G leaving them two points behind the Russians.

Looking ahead to Tuesday’s games, the Netherlands face a big match against the Czech Republic. The Dutch risk failing to reach a major finals for the first time since 2002 and must beat the Czechs at home whilst hoping that third-placed Turkey lose against Iceland.

Wales take on Andorra in a game which is likely to have a celebratory mood. Wales have already qualified alongside Belgium in Group B. Andorra will be looking to score their first points of the qualification round.
