Teenage striker Farouk Miya bagged a first half brace as Uganda swept past Togo 3-0 to reach the group stages of the African qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg in Togo, local nerves were eased four minutes into the game when skipper Geoffrey Massa scored the opener to make it 2-0 on aggregate.

The party at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala was in full swing by half time following the double from 17-year-old Miya just before the pause.

Milutin Sredojevic’s men will be among 20 teams in five groups of four who will battle for the five places for the finals in three years.

Zambia are also through to the group stages. Lubambo Musonda and Winston Kalengo struck in the second half to kill off Sudan’s hopes. The tie ended 3-0 on aggregate for the 2012 African champions.

Democratic Republic of Congo joined Zambia and Uganda in the hat for the draw. But they made heavy weather of their progress.

Leading 3-2 from the first leg in Burundi, Michael Jordan N’Kololo made it 4-2 after 19 minutes. The Congolese were pegged back when Dieumerci M’Bokani put through his own net mid way through the first half.

Yannick Bolasie’s penalty restored the two goal advantage but as the clock ticked down. Fiston Abdul Razak also scored from the penalty spot to reduce the advantage to 5-4.

Despite seven minutes of stoppage time, Burundi could not find the third goal to take the tie into extra-time.

Gabon were first to reach the group stages, which kick off next October, beating Mozambique in a penalty shootout in Libreville on Saturday night after it finished 1-1 on aggregate.
