Another bomb scare evacuates Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower was evacuated after a bomb alert on Tuesday evening for the second time in two weeks.

There were between 600 and 700 visitors on the tower at the time of the evacuation, which started at 7.15pm.

No explosives were found in the area. The alert was given after an anonymous call from a telephone box in the seventh arrondissement. The caller warned there was a booby-trapped package

The Eiffel Tower, the Champ de Mars and the surrounding area were evacuated on 14 September after a similar call, which came from the gare du Nord, one of Paris’s main railway stations.

French authorities have increased the threat level from red to reinforced red since the five French nationals were kidnapped in Niger by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
