Le France 50th anniversary
Le France in New York City
Collection French Lines
By Susan Owensby

In 1961 the world's largest and fastest cruise ship left the French northern port city of Le Havre for New York on its maiden voyage. Instantly recognisable by its two state-of-the-art red and black funnels, the ocean-going symbol of the country, Le France, was meant to showcase French industrial know-how as well as the country's art and design. This summer, Le Havre is paying homage to the 50th anniversary of what has been called "the ship amongst ships".
