The city police announced a 16.5 per cent fall in the number of handbag snatches or pickpockets, down from 3,438 at the beginning of the year to 2,870 during July and August.

At the beginning of the summer, Interior Minister Manuel Valls ordered an increased police presence around some of the most visited parts of the city such as Montmartre, Champs Elysées, Trocadéro, The Louvre, Notre Dame and the big department stores.

A crime awareness campaign on buses and in the Métro also seems to have had some affect.

France is the most visited country in the world and Paris is one of the most popular cities among tourists.
