Between 15 and 20 percent of Air France flights from Paris’s Orly airport and a number of regional hubs including Nice, Marseille, Bordeaux and Lyon have been affected.

The first Saturday in August is one of the busiest travel days of the year.

An Air France spokesperson said that all passengers have been informed of any cancellation in their itinerary, adding that long-haul flights were expected to take off on schedule.

The airline warned passengers to expect delays but said flights to and from Paris’s main airport Charles de Gaulle airport would also go ahead as planned.

Air france ground staff are calling for better work conditions and salaries and increased flight security.

They also oppose the use of subcontracters.

A statement from the CGT-Roissy union said Air France's management had falsely invoked the financial crisis to justify applying "austerity" measures to employee salaries.

It said austerity was just for the employees, while the management and stockholders continued to get richer.
