Police say they spotted the animal but lost sight of it after the wife of the manager of supermarket manager reported sighting a bit cat on Thursday morning.

"My wife saw it this morning on the Intermarché carpark," said Jean-Baptiste Berdeaux."She didn't get out of the car and called me to say 'I think I've seen a lynx'."

She took a photo of the animal lying in the grass  and took it to the police, who launched a search.

The search party say that the beast "strongly resembles a tiger".

The local council has called on local residents not to go near the area on foot and to call emergency services if they "spot the tiger".

There have been no reports of missing big cats in the area.
