French air traffic controllers strike Thursday, Friday

French air traffic controllers were due to strike on Thursday and Friday as the summer holiday season opened. But the main union in the profession called the movement off on Wednesdy afternoon.

After 25 hours, negotiations between the government and trade unions broke down on Tuesday evening with two unions calling a new strike for the end of the week.

A previous strike on 8-9 April led to 1,300 flights being cancelled and cost the industry 20 million euros, according to the French air industry federation.

Only two unions have called this week's strike, although one is the largest in the profession.

Another three dropped their strike call for Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon the majority union dropped the call for Wednesday and Thursday, leaving the effectiveness of the action in doubt.

Air traffic controllers' representatives are calling for a bonus to compensate for an experimental reorganisation of the profession and say that they have lost 100-200 euros per month in a reevaluation of public-sector bonuses.

The unions are also angry that the airlines' contributions to the budget of their sector has been reduced four per cent, a move they say is in breach of an earlier government commitment and will mean problems in the future.
